You can see that it is just past 3 am. “Bbbrrrrring Bbbrrrrring” The phone rattles, with almost a more urgent tone. Reaching over, you clumsily bring the receiver to your ear. “Hello?” “I have an urgent assignment for you, and there isn’t any time to waste. We’ve just launched the ADRIFT Project, and something has gone terribly wrong. The ship will be over your house in 5.3 minutes to beam you aboard. We need you to test all the major areas to make sure we’re not getting false readings. It is a very difficult task and Drifters around the world are depending on you. I know you can do it. You will be the only human on board. Be on the lookout for DARWIN. I think it’s the cause of the false readings we’re getting. It may have tampered with the ADRIFT-O-Sweep too. I knew that robot should have been tested more.” “What? Can’t this wait until morning?” “It is morning, by my calculations. We don’t have any time to spare. The next ADRIFT release is due and the Drifters are restless. One more thing, Luna, the Holographic Informational Assistant should be able to help you out with some things. Just press HIA on the control panel. Well, time is up. Once you have everything fixed, you should be able to contact me through the Drift-O-Com. You might want to take the nickel-cadmium accumulator with you.” _____________________________ Before you can object any further or refuse, your body becomes a glittery swirl and the phone falls from your now semi-transparent hand. You quickly grab the nickel-cadium accumulator off your nightstand with your other hand, before it is too late. Twisting in every direction, every particle of your body is dematerialized. You never been transported before, and certainly had no intentions of having it done now. You’ve seen the transporter tests conducted back at the main lab and were horrified to discover that upon materialization, some of the testers body parts were put back in the wrong places. You can only hope that it doesn’t happen this time. You certainly don’t want to have your hand sticking out where your nose should be. A rush of warmth washes over you as you are materialized on the bridge of the Beta-Drifter. You quickly run your hands across your face and discover that you are in one piece, letting a sigh of relief escape you. The ADRIFT Project Classified An Interactive Fiction Adventure Project Duration April - July 2004 by Mystery Copyright © Dana Crane Press Enter to Begin Adventure The Bridge You are on the bridge of the Beta-Drifter. The captain’s chair sits in the center, looking out to a sea of endless stars that are visible through the main screen. Titanium walls encircle the bridge, and are embedded with several flat-screen control panels that flicker randomly. The door to the ADRIFT-O-Lift is to the south, near a small vent that lies at ground level and appears to have some writing just above it. Ø take suit You take the gravity suit from the captain's chair. Ø wear it (the gravity suit) You put on the gravity suit. Ø open door You open the Adrift-O-Lift door. Ø s You move south. The ADRIFT-O-Lift The ADRIFT-O-Lift is the central hub for ship access. Doors with small open vents located in the bottom of them lead to the north, south, southeast, and southwest. There is a lever near a control panel on the wall that flickers with multicolored lights. There is a lever on the wall, though it seems a little primative for such a fancy ship. You can move north, south, southeast and southwest. Ø s You move south. Central Communications Core This area of the ship is the CCC (Central Communications Core), though it looks more like war zone. The panels have been pulled off the walls and severed wires hang out all over the place, some throwing sparks off in every direction. The Drift-O-Com in the center of the room is a mess. It looks like someone took a hacksaw to it, and it is clear that it isn’t fixable, at least from what you can tell. It looks like the only thing in the room that is still intact is a battery charger in the ceiling. An open vent on the doors allows the ADRIFT-O-Sweep access to the CCC. You can move north and south. Ø stand on phone You stand on the DRIFT-O-Com. Ø put battery in charger (Your score has increased by 5) The charger flashes repeatedly, giving the room the appearance of being a lit by a strobe light. You take the opportunity to do your best John Travolta impression, from the movie Saturday Night Fever. A couple of moments later, the charger flashes red three times and the battery falls. You manage to catch it, but lose your balance in the process and fall from the Drift-O-Com. DARWIN enters from the south. Ø n (Standing up first) You move north. Ø sw You move southwest. Objectorium The walls of the Objectorium blend into most of the furnishings, nearly concealing a cabinet. A very long purple sofa is securely fastened to the floor, and a titanium coffee table is likewise bolted down just a few feet away. On the wall near the doorway is a lighted control panel that randomly flickers with bright colors. A larger window wraps its way around the outer perimeter of the Objectorium. An open vent located near the door at ground level grabs your attention and has some writing just above it. There is a black box firmly attached to the outside of a cabinet. You can only move northeast. Ø x table Made out of some sort of heavy-duty crystal, the table looks as if it has little tiny bubbles floating about within it. A blue Drift-O-Sphere and a coffee cup are on the coffee table. Ø take cup You take the coffee cup from the coffee table. Ø x sofa The long, purple sofa, that is bolted to the floor, sits below a viewing window, which gives you a lovely view of the earth. The Drift-O-Jump tin and a piece of string are on the sofa. Ø take string and tin You take the Drift-O-Jump tin and the piece of string from the sofa. Ø ne You move northeast. DARWIN is intently working on something, but you can't make out what it is. It turns away from you each time you approach. It doesn't seem to be concerned at all about your presence. You can move north, south, southeast and southwest. Ø se You move southeast. Captain's Quarters The Captain’s quarters is a little bigger than you expected. A control panel on the wall near the doorway flickers with multi-colored lights, just below a poster. Beneath a large wrap-around window is a fold up bed, mounted to the side; hardly what you’d expect for the captain of any ship. A pedestal near the fold up bed, holds a digital ship’s log built right into the top. A short room divider partially conceals a chrome toilet and wash basin, but still gives a nice view through the window. A wardrobe built into the wall blends right in, and has a small vent beneath it with some writing just above it. You can only move northwest. Ø open wardrobe You open the wardrobe. A green Drift-O-Sphere and a piece of gum are inside the wardrobe. Ø take gum and orb You take the green Drift-O-Sphere and the piece of gum from the wardrobe. Ø chew gum (Your score has increased by 5) You chew the gum and are shocked that it tastes just like sour milk! That will teach you to clean out your fridge more often, otherwise you'd never know what it tastes like. As much as you are enjoying the experience, you take the gum out of your mouth. Ø put gum on string (Your score has increased by 5) You stick the gum to the end of the string. Ø put gum in drain (Your score has increased by 5) You carefully dangle the string blindly down the narrow drain. After a few moments you finally hear something tinking the sides. Slowly, you pull the string up and discover a small silver key stuck to the piece of gum. Pulling the key, the gum sticks to it, and the string falls down the drain and disappears. You remove the gum from the key and notice the key has some writing on it. Ø nw You move northwest. The ADRIFT-O-Lift The ADRIFT-O-Lift is the central hub for ship access. An open vent located near the door at ground level grabs your attention and has some writing just above it. There is a black box firmly attached to the outside of a cabinet. You can only move northeast. Ø open box You can't open the black box as it is locked! Ø unlock box You unlock the black box with the silver key. Ø open it (the black box) You open the black box. The remote control is inside the black box. Ø take remote You take the remote control from the black box. Ø put batter in remote It is not clear which object you are referring to. Ø put battery in remote You put the small battery inside the remote control. Ø ne You move northeast. The ADRIFT-O-Lift The ADRIFT-O-Lift is the central hub for ship access. Ø d You push the lever into the DOWN position and all of a sudden the spot right under your feet turns mushy and you slowly sink downward. It reminds you of the old movies and a guy falls into quicksand and is about to sink completely when someone arrives with a vine or short stick to save him...Anyway.... A few minutes later you emerge through the ceiling of what appears to be another ADRIFT-O-Lift, and drop to the floor, landing on your feet. ADRIFT-O-Dump The horrible smell can only mean one thing. This must be the ADRIFT-O-Dump. Trash is piled high from the floor to the ceiling with rotten food and broken ship parts, obviously torn apart by DARWIN. The control panel in this room has also been destroyed, and the lever to the hatch has been bent so badly that it is doubtful it could open the hatch to expel the foul-smelling trash into space. There is a little room left in the door for the ADRIFT-O-Sweep to continue dumping trash. DARWIN is intently working on something, but you can't make out what it is. It turns away from you each time you approach. It doesn't seem to be concerned at all about your presence. You can only move north. Ø take pill Take what? DARWIN exits to the north. Ø open tin You open the Drift-O-Jump tin. A small pill is inside the Drift-O-Jump tin. Ø take pill You take the small pill from the Drift-O-Jump tin. Ø put pill in cup You put the small pill inside the coffee cup. Ø take slime (Your score has increased by 10) Trying not to touch it, you manage to scoop the bulk of the slime into the cup. The second the slime and the pill come in contact with each other, the slime begins to brighten, emitting a foul smelling, greenish smoke into the air. Coughing and gasping for air, you wave your arms to clear some of the smoke. Once it settles, the slime in the cup is a bright green and bubbling fantastically. Ø n You move north. As the space gets more and more cramped, you try and scramble over to the lever to push it back down, but it is too late! Expecting to be crushed to death, you begin to scream. When the ceiling finally makes contact with your body, you are relieved to discover that you are being pushed up through the floor as if it were water. There is large tube attached to the wall with a hole at the top and a tray at the bottom. A sign on the wall is located right next to it, along with a button and dark box with some writing on it. A small vent is located in the bottom of the door that leads north from here. There is also a control panel on the wall, near the door. You can only move north. Ø pour slime in box (Your score has increased by 5) The slime gurgles and bubbles down the funnel and disappears, leaving no residue behind. Ø put green orb in tube (Your score has increased by 5) You put the green orb into the tube it sputters a few times and spews out a puff of green smoke. When it clears, you discover something in the tray. Ø x tray The tray is long and silver, and firmly attached to the wall. A green Drift-O-Sphere is inside the tray. Ø take orb You take the green Drift-O-Sphere from the tray. Ø activate orb I don't understand what you want me to do with the green Drift-O-Sphere. Ø twist green orb (Your score has increased by 10) You twist the green Drift-O-Sphere until you hear a click. It then begins to vibrate slightly and flicker with a greenish light. Trying to gain your balance, you make your way to the bridge of the Beta-Drifter just in time to see a ton of trash floating out in space. Ø push button (Your score has increased by 10) You push the button and the Captain Wild appears on the static filled screen. "Mystery, you made it! Is everything ok?" "Yes. Though I think the ship is going to need some major repairs. I had to blow the dump. That robot tore the place up, and blowing the hatch was the only way to get rid of him." "So DARWIN survived?" "Yeah, but you can consider it space junk now. I don't imagine it will last too long out here. I think it was headed for the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter." "Well done. When Luna gets everything back online, we'll bring you in. Cheers!" The screen goes blank and you climb back down and head to the bridge. Once back on Earth, Captain Wild and the entire ADRIFT community greet you, chanting your name. "Mystery! Mystery! Mystery!" You scored 90 out of the maximum 100! That is 90% of the game! You finished 10 points short. [Press any key to end]
